An Orthodox Understanding of Marriage
2010 Eagle River Institute Presentation
†Bishop ILIA (Katre)
"Here
are some of my notes from the talks. This was a very
interesting lecture. No one dozed off! . And when each talk was over,
people began to talk about what they heard. Dr Reynolds is a captivating
speaker. And what he has to say is based on years of observation and
discussion. He is not a light weight speaker After you listen you will
want to pass this on to others!" Don Lourie
Bishop ILIA Katre, with his beloved wife,
Helen, shared 39 years of married life and raised two children before
her death in 2001. He was consecrated as Bishop of the
Albanian Orthodox Diocese of America in Constantinople (Istanbul) on May

the church fathers and mothers and from real life. His stories are
informative and endearing.

The Purpose and Blessing of Marriage
- The mission of the church is to serve. Also our mission in marriage is
to serve. We are co-workers with God. Teach by example how to serve
others. Couples should pray together. Practice fasting to what is
reasonable for the couple.
- Read scripture together. And use the scripture as a measure of how we
are doing. Have the fear of God. We should be in awe of the all that
God is doing and done for us. The couple should have similar and shared
values. These should be discussed before marriage.
- Marriage is a reflection of the Kingdom of God. In marriage we find
sanctification both spiritually and physically. Husband and wife are not
equal but they do compliment each other.
- The uncreated energy of God is at work within the relationship of
marriage. In Genesis, God gave everything created the power to procreate
and said it was good.
- God has given us everything we need to fulfill our potential that God
has purposed for us. Wives are to order life in a way that shows unity
in the relationship. Husband to love the wife as himself. They are one.
- Each is a helpmate for the other. A helpmate for salvation. Marriage is
a lifelong commitment . What God has ordered is for our good and
happiness.
- Marriage is to channel our gift of sexuality. Sex outside of marriage is
sinful and leads to disease, depression and heartache. Sexuality in
marriage is a gift. Christ blessed the sanctity of marriage by
attending the marriage in Cana.

- Cannot marry if married twice before.
- Christians are forbidden to marry non Christians.
- How to prevent divorce.
- Get couple into counsel with others. Couple must go to confession. Must
discuss problems with others is a peaceful setting.

Orthodox Betrothal and Crowning Service
- We were created to be married. If not married one should dedicate his
life to God's work.
- The betrothal service prayers date to the 8th century. The
prayers establish a couple's trust in the promises of God. The rings
testifies to the power of the Holy Spirit. Parents should pray for God
to send a suitable mate for their children.
- These two
talks are a reading of the prayers of the betrothal and crowning
services with extensive comments.
