13 - Salvation

HT-13-01     The Meaning of the Cross
HT-13-02     The Meaning of the Cross (continued)
HT-13-03     The Meaning of the Cross (continued)

Fr. Thomas explains how Christ fulfills through the cross the offices of prophet, priest and king.  The mystery of the cross perfects the original design of God for mankind.  He explains the different types of love, charity, mercy, affection and relates them to their proper patterns as expressions of the Godhead.  This is teaching filled with stark and agonizing contrasts.  It serves up a good measure of sanity about such current concerns as self-esteem, abandonment, hatred, self-loathing and multiple personalities.  "The Meaning of the Cross" is really a mini-course worthy of being mined again and again.

HT-42-01/04   Spiritual Sickness and Healing

This CD album is made of the three different talks bellow on this subject. It was edited and compiled from these talks given in the 1980's.

4 CD Series {HT-42-01/04} --> $19 + S&H shim

HT-42-01     Healing and the Eucharistic Life --> $4 + S&H

There is a relationship between health and the spiritual life. Physical and all other types of healing are discussed in the context of the liturgical life of the church.  True healing is possible but only if part of God's will for each of us.

HT-42-02     Spiritual Sickness and Healing --> $4 + S&H

Bodily healing may not be for God's glory.  Why is this?  How should we think about the body and soul in this life in relation to eternity? Sickness may even be for our soul's salvation.

HT-42-03     Most Essential Healing
HT-42-04     Most Essential Healing (continued)

Because Christ is victorious over death and is present in the Church, His healing power remains even to today.  But his promises are for the healing of the soul, but not always the body.

43 - Marriage

tape HT-43-01     The Theology of Sex --> $4 + S&H shim

Marriage, family and sexuality must all be put in context of a proper theology.  Only Jesus Christ can show us a proper view of sex.  There can be no definition of human life and therefore sex without reference to God.

HT-44-02     The Family and The Spiritual Life (continued)

Contemporary Christian OrthodoxyHT-60-05/07     Contemporary Christian Orthodoxy

3 CD Set --> $17 + S&H 3 Cassette Series --> $12 + S&H

This is a "State of the Union" address for American Christians. This very frank message, in three parts, discusses many of our problems and how they affect individuals, families and churches. Fr. Thomas shows how the gospel of Christ can overcome these problems. Very practical. A good message to listen to often.

“Sometimes it is good to go back to the very basic things and take a look at them again” - Fr Thomas Hopko

The purpose of this teaching is to review in thesis form what is the essence of the Orthodox World View.

  • What do Orthodox Christians and the Orthodox Church throughout history really think about things?
  • How do we understand the reality of life and why we are here?
  • What are the essential elements of our understanding of reality?

What Fr Thomas presents are the essential dogmas of the church. They are unassailable, undebatable points of Christian Orthodoxy.

This is a very frank message to Orthodox Christians. 1. Go to church. 2. Pray and 3. Remember God. It is a simple formula and one which Fr Thomas expounds on for four hours.

These talks were given in the early 1990’s and edited in 2009.

63 - Spiritual Warfare

Spritual Warfare

HT-63-01shimSpiritual Warfare
HT-63-02shim(Continued)
HT-63-03shim(Continued)

Spiritual sickness is healed with spiritual warfare. Our victory has already been won by the work of Jesus Christ but we are still live in a world of strife. Our own warfare is the way we claim this victory. Fr. Thomas defines this struggle and tells us how to engage in this struggle on a daily and hourly basis.

The Place of Gratitude in the Christian Life

HT-65-01    The Place of Gratitude in the Christian Life - November 2004 - 92 min

Fr. Thomas says, “Gratitude is life and if a person is ungrateful, they are dead. The content of life in the Christian view is perpetual gratitude in and for everyone and everything in all circumstances, particularly in afflictions and in suffering.” Then he goes on to say that this is so and why it is so.

These two cassettes give a good foundation on the churches teaching on icons.

HT-80-01     Why Icons Are Essential to the Christian Faith --> $4 + S&H

Heather Mac Kean is an iconographer (one who writes icons). She explains the practical theology of icons and how they reveal truth to all who view icons. This tape fits well with the following lecture.

HT-80-02     The Doctrine of The Church According to the Icons --> $4 + S&H

The center of the Christian faith is a human and He has been raised from the dead and we have seen and handled this God Himself.  Jesus is the very Icon of God.

83 - Men & Women

HT-83-01     Sexuality and Sanctity: --> $4 + S&H shim
shimMen and Women Saints and How They Relate to Each Other and To God

Fr. Thomas says man is incomplete without woman.  This is true in marriage and in all other relationships in life.  Even the great saints in monastic life have stated the need to be complete through a spiritual relationship with women.  Together, they learn the depths of God to a greater degree than alone.

HT-90-02     What Must We Humans Do to Know God?

HT-94-21     How To Pray --> $8 + S&H
HT-94-22     (continued)

This two-tape set on prayer is a practical look at prayer.  This would be a good set to listen to instead of the 19 tape series above if you want a good introduction and basis for more study on prayer.  As always on any of Fr. Thomas' presentations, there a lots of questions and answers.

The Power & Wonder of Prayer

Available on CD HT-94-31     The Power and Wonder of Prayer --> $11 + S&H
HT-94-32     (continued)

“Prayer is an active life. Prayer is the conscious, purposeful, intentional act through which we are united fully and completely with God for the purpose of being a divine life.” “The essence of prayer is ‘not my will but Your will be done. ’Life is the conscious communion with God for every second, with every thought.” - Fr Thomas Hopko

The first message answers the questions about prayer, To whom do we pray? Why do we pray? And what is prayer?

The second message tells how we pray. This includes the three main areas of prayer used by Christians for 2000 years. This is the prayer of the Divine Liturgy, the personal rule of prayer for each individual and the constant, unceasing prayer of the heart. Fr Thomas explains how each of these is unique yet dependant on each other for a healthy life.

This series is intense, very informative and  practical.
These talks were given in the early 1990’s but is a timeless message.
